Protected Structure

Overlooking the river Nore outside Kilkenny the existing thatched cottage is a protected structure. The project called for the internal refurbishment of the cottage and the provision of a new split-level two-storey addition to the rear and the landscaping of the site. The addition is set back into the raised ground to the rear of the cottage such that the upper floor relates to the established garden level to the north and east. A study, entrance area, utility room and additional bedrooms are located on the lower ground floor. On the upper level a kitchen and living-dining area are arranged around a west facing external terrace facing to the river with a separate family room set half a level above.

Formed in concrete the ground based element of the addition and adjacent external terraces and pavement areas are finished in brick while the raised pavilions that house the family rooms are clad in cedar. Glazed end walls provide views to the garden and the valley below. Internally the concrete walls and ceilings have an exposed sandblasted finish, oak floors are used throughout with the exception of the polished concrete service areas. The walls and ceiling of the circulation areas are clad to match the floor.
