National College of Ireland, Dulin

This project explored the possibility of making a new intervention into the courtyard of the existing building as part of a broader strategy to provide the college with a new identity. The courtyard space largely operated as a light well to the surrounding teaching and office spaces. It was envisaged that this space could become central to the life of the college operating as a performance venue catering for graduations, exhibitions, screenings and lectures. Further the space would connect into the surrounding urban fabric drawing the college further into the life of the area as a whole. The strategy envisaged a series of simple adaptable pavilions located around the edge of the courtyard that would accommodate different uses as required. Both the pavilions and the surrounding ground were clad in a single sheet external grade rubber to provide a distinctive and memorable material identity to the intervention.
